The book endevours to apply the social science concept of trust to the post-World War II history of arms control and United Nations peacekeeping. In doing so the book brings together two specialized fields that are ordinarily treated separately, namely, peacekeeping and arms control. The result is an analysis of the emergence of an environment of institutionalized trust that holds promise of reducing the possibility of major wars and promoting non-violent political competiton on a global scale. While introducing the reader to the principal factors in the arms race and the major challenges to peacekeepers, the book describes the specific institutional developments that promote confidence and trust among former and prospective adversaries. Explores current military functional dilemmas of how basic war winning objectives can be reconciled to new peacekeeping and humanitarian duties.
